My start in golf
My Aunt Jen who was a bit of a looker and a laugh, loved bingo and gin. It used to take her about 4 hours to get ready before going out. Sometimes I had to sit in the hair dressers on a Saturday morning with my mum, Joan, Auntie Jen and Auntie June. This would take all morning, they looked like they had some sort of space ship sitting on their heads and the noise was deafening. All smoking fags with endless cups of tea on the go and laughing about all sorts of things that I knew nothing about. When they were done they all looked the same, their hair was about a foot tall protected by a 3 inch thick layer of hair lacquer. Then when they came out they would cover their hair with a headscarf. Could never work that one out..
My Aunt Jen would say
"I'm taking you over to the park to play golf", "ok".
I used to make my way over to Battersea Park to play crazy golf. They had built this concrete thing that looked nothing like they do now, nor anything like a putting green.
So I got my ball and a putter from a man in this little hut and off I would go. I loved it, it took me about half an hour to get round and I can remember coming in and the man said
"well done son, that's the lowest score today, that means you get another go for nothing"...
Brilliant, I must be good I thought. Then I would come back in and he would give me more kind words of encouragement, he told me that I have a really good technique and I should go round again. I always thought it was strange that sometimes I would look round and my Aunt was nowhere to be seen, nor could I see the man from the hut.. perhaps I wasn't that good at putting after all.
So in some way I need to thank my Auntie Jen for starting my interest in golf. It was strange, we stopped going after a while. We turned up to play one day and the man's wife was helping him. I thought she was nice, Jen hated her..

Boris and I...
I have said it many times, golf has given me everything. It has taken taking me to wonderful places, and I have spent time with very interesting people.
Our wife's got together and said "it would be nice if our men played some golf together", they were right.
On Monday we teed off the first at Sunningdale Old course on a beautiful, autumn, sunny morning and had so much fun.
Sometimes I have to have a little smile to myself, it seemed like yesterday I was standing doing my car parking duties for the club. The year was 1985 and all of Wimbledon were going crazy over a kid called Boris Becker, "he could win this" many were saying and he did.
And again the next year and again in 1989 on his way to a grand slam.
Wind the clock forward 30 odd years and I'm walking these beautiful fairways with Boris, talking about both of our careers, his was a little bit more interesting than mine...
